Acute Technology Inc. issues an I2C trigger application note for its TravelLogic series logic analyzers

2011-09-01

The purpose of this application note is to help users to find out problems arising from the I2C transmission problems with the TravelLogic logic analyzer. There are some frequently asked questions:

Is the TravelLogic series logic analyzers helpful in finding the I2C signal problems if the TravelLogic only capable of measuring digital signal?

When stacking the TravelLogic logic analyzer with a DSO, the logic analyzer software displays the digital and analogue waveform on the same window; this helps the user compares the digital waveform and analog waveform at the same time. The user can also save the digital and analog waveform as a file to share it with others by the software (LA Viwer).

How can I capture more I2C data?

The TravelLogic has the transitional storage to record the I2C signal up to nearly 3,400 seconds; it will increase the recorded data for the embedded memory buffer.

How come my logic analyzer never capture the I2C data I am interested?

You should use the I2C trigger to capture your wanted I2C data; the I2C trigger needs you to set some specific conditions like Address or Data to start capturing (trigger) data fit into your conditions.

I see many non-meaningful noises when capturing the I2C signal, what should I do?

The non-meaningful noises arise from slow-moving and bouncing I2C signal with one threshold voltage to determine logic low or logic high. The TravelLogic series logic analyzer offers the Schmitt circuit with two threshold voltages (voltage-high, voltage-low) to filter such noises.

Can I use the I2C trigger for SMBus/PMBus signal?

Yes! Set the I2C trigger with the converted SMBus/PMBus parameter; the I2C trigger is available for any signal based on the I2C protocol.

Is there any applications for the I2C trigger?

Yes! Please refer to the I2C application note provided by Acute Technology Inc.

The I2C circuit may crash sometime; can I view the waveform after the crash?

Yes! Please use the Width trigger to trigger when the clock or data does not transit over a specific time; use the transitional storage to see more data if needed.
