MCTP (Management Component Transport Protocol), defined by the DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force), is a
transport-independent protocol that can run over multiple physical layers such as PCIe,
I²C,
I3C,
SMBus,
UART, and Ethernet, enabling management and monitoring of servers and embedded systems.
When MCTP runs over I²C, I3C, or SMBus, management controllers (such as BMC, EC, NIC, GPU) can exchange standardized messages across the bus
for applications like device monitoring, remote management, and power & thermal control.
MCTP over I²C / SMBus has been widely adopted in servers and hardware monitoring, offering multi-device support and low power consumption;
while MCTP over I3C provides higher speed, lower power, and more flexible device management, further enhancing system management efficiency.
Acute Technology provides logic analyzers with decoding support for
MCTP over I3C / MCTP over I²C / MCTP over SMBus.
